Choosing the right gas cartridge for your Primus stove starts with checking its connection. This guide helps you understand Lindal valves, when an adapter may be needed, and what to check before travelling.
What is a Lindal valve?
Many Primus gas stoves use a screw-on connection designed for gas cartridges with a threaded, self-sealing Lindal valve. Primus Power Gas, Summer Gas and Winter Gas cartridges use this type of connection.
Always check your particular stove’s instructions for the recommended cartridge and fuel. Do not assume that every cartridge from a particular brand will fit, or that a liquid-fuel bottle uses the same connection as a gas cartridge.
Will other gas cartridges fit?
Gas cartridges are available with several different fittings. Threaded, clip-on and pierceable cartridges are not interchangeable without the appropriate equipment.
A stove designed for a threaded Lindal valve cannot connect directly to a pierceable cartridge. Other valve systems may require an adapter specifically approved for your stove and the cartridge you intend to use.
Using your Primus stove abroad
The gas cartridges available can vary between countries and retailers. Before travelling, check what is sold at your destination and whether your stove requires a compatible adapter.
- Check the exact model of your stove and its connection type.
- Confirm which cartridges and fuels the stove manufacturer recommends.
- If an adapter is needed, check that it is suitable for both your stove and the gas container.
- Use the guide below as a starting point, and confirm local availability before your trip.

Primus Omnifuel Expedition Multifuel Stoves have been tested extensively on countless expeditions in a huge range of climatic conditions, and have proved not only to be powerful but also extremely robust and reliable.
These easy to service stoves use state of the art materials to offer advanced functionality, and can run on almost all available liquid fuel types, even those that are found in the remotest parts of the world- LP gas, gasoline/petrol, diesel, kerosene, even aviation fuel. Exchangeable jet nipples are clearly marked for each fuel type and attached to the pot supports so that they are never lost.
The windproof burner allows the flame to adjust to wind conditions, minimising the chance of a sudden gush extinguishing the flame, whilst the self-bleeding fuel line and Ergo fuel pump help to eliminate spills and flare-ups. The built-in preheating system and windscreen makes it very stable in extreme weather conditions and the steel sheathing of the fuel line also remains flexible in cold temperatures. The non-slip pot supports lock securely in the unfolded position and fold flat making the stove more compact when packed away.
Designed to handle demanding situations, extreme altitudes and both low and high temperatures, the Omnifuel stoves are essential for professional explorers and mountaineers.
