The Most Sustainable Outdoor Clothing Isn't Always Made From Sustainable Materials

Sustainability has become one of the biggest conversations in the outdoor industry. Browse any outdoor retailer's website and you'll find products promoted as recycled, recyclable, organic, natural, circular, low-impact, or environmentally friendly. These are important developments and we welcome innovation that reduces environmental impact. But we believe there is another question that deserves equal attention. How long will the product last? Because while materials matter, longevity matters too.

A Different Way To Think About Sustainability

When people discuss sustainable outdoor clothing, the conversation often focuses on what a garment is made from. Less attention is paid to how long that garment remains in use.

A base layer that is replaced every few years requires new raw materials, new manufacturing, new transportation and new packaging every time it is replaced. However, a base layer that continues to perform year after year reduces the need for replacement and keeps those resources working for longer. That's why durability has always been central to how we think about outdoor clothing.

Built For Use, Not For Trends

At Sub Zero, we've never been interested in fast-moving fashion trends. Outdoor clothing has a job to do. It needs to perform when conditions are challenging. It needs to be dependable. And it needs to last.

For more than five decades, we've focused on producing garments that people can rely on in the mountains, on expeditions, during outdoor work and in everyday life. Many of our customers still use products they purchased years ago. Some have shared stories of garments that have accompanied them on countless adventures and continue to perform exactly as intended. For us, that's one of the most meaningful measures of success.

Longevity Is Sustainability

The outdoor industry rightly celebrates innovation in sustainable materials. But sustainability isn't only about what something is made from. It's also about how long it remains useful. Research consistently shows that extending the lifespan of clothing is one of the most effective ways of reducing its overall environmental impact. Simply put, products that stay in use longer generally require fewer replacements and generate less waste over time. That's why we believe longevity in outdoor clothing deserves a bigger place in the sustainability conversation.

Reducing Waste In Manufacturing

Longevity is only part of the story. We're also continually working to reduce waste within our own manufacturing processes.

Over recent years we have:

  • Reduced fabric offcuts by 72%
  • Reduced trade waste by 69%
  • Increased the use of recyclable and compostable packaging by 62%
  • Improved our factories energy efficiency by 43%
  • Expanded our repair capabilities to help customers extend product life

These improvements aren't driven by marketing trends. They're driven by a belief that resources should be used responsibly and products should be built properly from the start.

Why British Manufacturing Matters

Sub Zero remains proudly manufactured in Britain. Producing locally allows us to maintain close control over quality, continuously improve our processes and ensure the standards we expect are consistently met. It's an approach that has helped define our business since the beginning.

While many brands have moved production around the world, we continue to manufacture in Leicestershire and invest in the skills and expertise that have shaped our products for generations.

Looking Beyond The Label

The sustainability debate doesn't need to be an argument between recycled materials and durability. Both matter. But as consumers, it's worth asking a broader question:

How long will this product still be serving me in five years? Ten years? Twenty years?

Because ultimately, the most sustainable outdoor clothing isn't always the garment with the most sustainability claims attached to it. Sometimes it's simply the one that's still being worn years later.

Quality Doesn't Happen By Accident

For outdoor clothing to last, quality has to be built into every stage of the process. Durability isn't simply a result of the materials chosen. It's influenced by design decisions, manufacturing standards, quality control procedures and a culture of continuous improvement.

At Sub Zero, quality has always been fundamental to how we operate. In fact, we have maintained accreditation to the ISO 9001 Quality Management System since 2001. For over two decades, this internationally recognised standard has helped us ensure that quality remains at the heart of everything we do—from product development and manufacturing through to customer service. Because when customers trust a garment to perform in demanding environments, consistency matters. And consistency comes from having the right systems, processes and people in place.

Our Philosophy

At Sub Zero, we've always believed outdoor clothing should be built to earn its place in your kit bag. Not just for this season. But for many seasons to come. Because real sustainability isn't only about how products begin their life. It's also about how long they stay useful.
