Why We Still Manufacture Outdoor Clothing In Britain

At a time when much of the clothing industry has moved production overseas, people often ask us a simple question:

Why do you still manufacture in Britain?

It's a fair question.

Global manufacturing can offer lower costs, larger production volumes and access to extensive supply chains. Many businesses have understandably chosen that route.

But at Sub Zero, we've continued to manufacture outdoor clothing in Leicestershire. Not because it's the easiest option. Because we believe it's the right one.

Quality Starts With Control

When people buy outdoor clothing, they're placing their trust in it. Whether they're climbing a mountain, working outdoors in winter conditions or simply walking the dog on a cold morning, they need confidence that their clothing will perform when it matters. That level of reliability doesn't happen by accident. It comes from quality materials, skilled manufacturing and consistent standards.

By manufacturing in Britain, we're able to maintain close control over every stage of production. Our design, development and manufacturing teams work closely together, allowing us to identify improvements, solve challenges quickly and ensure the standards we expect are maintained. For us, quality isn't something that can be inspected into a garment at the end. It's something that's built into the process from the beginning.

More Than Five Decades Of Experience

Sub Zero's roots stretch back to 1969. Over the decades we've learned a great deal about what outdoor clothing needs to do in real-world conditions. We've seen technologies change. We've seen trends come and go. But one thing has remained constant: People want products they can trust.

The experience and knowledge built up over generations of manufacturing continues to shape every product we make today. That expertise cannot be replicated overnight. It's developed through years of designing, testing, manufacturing and listening to customers.

The Value Of Skilled Manufacturing

Behind every garment is a team of skilled people. Pattern cutters. Machinists. Quality inspectors. Production specialists. Their expertise plays a critical role in ensuring every product meets the standards our customers expect.

Manufacturing in Britain allows us to invest in those skills and support the people whose knowledge helps define our products. In an age of automation and mass production, human expertise still matters. Especially when quality is the priority.

Manufacturing Where It Makes Sense

While British manufacturing remains at the heart of Sub Zero, we're also realistic about the challenges facing modern manufacturing. Not every product we sell is manufactured in our Leicestershire factory. Some products require specialist machinery, production techniques or manufacturing capabilities that are no longer widely available within the UK. In these situations, we work with carefully selected manufacturing partners who can meet the standards our customers expect.

Whenever possible, we prioritise UK manufacturing. Where that's not feasible, we look first to trusted European manufacturing partners who share our commitment to quality, consistency and responsible production. Only when suitable alternatives cannot be found do we look further afield.

For us, manufacturing decisions are not driven solely by cost. They are driven by a simple question: Can this product be made to the quality standards we require? If the answer is yes, and it can be produced in Britain, that's our preferred route. If not, we work with carefully chosen partners who can deliver the same level of quality and performance our customers expect from Sub Zero.

The same philosophy applies to the complementary brands we stock. We actively seek out British-made products wherever possible, particularly when they align with our values of quality, durability and long-term performance. However, as manufacturing capacity within the UK continues to shrink in certain sectors, finding suitable British suppliers has become increasingly challenging. Our commitment remains unchanged. Where a product is made matters. How well it is made matters even more.

Continuous Improvement

At Sub Zero we believe there is always room to improve. That's one reason we've maintained accreditation to the ISO 9001 Quality Management System since 2001. For more than two decades this internationally recognised standard has helped guide our commitment to quality, consistency and continuous improvement. It provides a framework that ensures we continually review our processes, identify opportunities for improvement and maintain the standards our customers rely upon. Because quality isn't a destination. It's a process.

Manufacturing Responsibly

British manufacturing also allows us to make improvements more effectively within our own operations. Over recent years we have:

  • Reduced fabric offcuts by 72%
  • Reduced trade waste by 69%
  • Increased the use of recyclable and compostable packaging by 62%
  • Improved factory energy efficiency by 43%
  • Expanded our repair capabilities to help extend product life

These improvements are part of our wider commitment to responsible manufacturing and making the best possible use of resources. They're not one-off projects. They're part of an ongoing journey.

Why It Matters To Customers

Ultimately, customers don't buy outdoor clothing because of where it's made. They buy it because they want it to perform. But where and how a product is made can have a significant impact on the quality, consistency and longevity of that product.

Manufacturing in Britain allows us to remain closely connected to every stage of production. It allows us to respond quickly, maintain high standards and continue building products designed to stand the test of time. For our customers, that means confidence. Confidence that their clothing has been designed and manufactured by people who genuinely care about the end result.

Looking Forward

The outdoor industry will continue to evolve. New materials will emerge. New technologies will develop. Consumer expectations will change. But our philosophy remains the same. Build products that perform. Build products that last. Build products we're proud to put our name on.

Manufacturing in Britain remains an important part of who we are. Where it makes sense, we manufacture locally and invest in British skills, expertise and production. Where specialist capabilities are required, we work with carefully selected partners who share our commitment to quality, durability and responsible manufacturing.

Because ultimately, our responsibility is to deliver products that perform, last and justify the trust our customers place in them.

Manufactured in Britain since 1969.
